The Port of San Francisco manages seven and a half miles of waterfront terrain, defined by the long, covered finger piers that stretch out into the bay. Beneath the current Embarcadero roadway lies an engineered seawall, a three-mile-long foundation constructed in the late nineteenth century to reclaim land from the former Yerba Buena Cove. This massive civil engineering project provided the stable ground necessary for the city’s expansion and the subsequent growth of its maritime industry.
