The Goethe–Schiller Monument in Golden Gate Park features two life-sized bronze figures standing side by side on a pedestal of red Missouri granite. The statue depicts the German writers Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, with Goethe holding a laurel wreath and Schiller reaching toward it with his hand. This work is an exact replica of an eighteen fifty-seven original by Ernst Rietschel that stands in Weimar, Germany.
