This bronze likeness of John McLaren is the only statue in Golden Gate Park that stands directly on the ground instead of on a pedestal. The figure holds a pine cone in one hand, representing the more than two million trees McLaren planted during his fifty-three years as the park’s superintendent. Saw marks from two failed theft attempts in nineteen fifty-three appear on the statue’s right leg.
