The Lefty O'Doul Bridge is a steel, heel-trunnion bascule bridge that lifts to clear the Mission Creek Channel. Designed by Joseph Strauss, the engineer behind the Golden Gate Bridge, this span opened on May twelve, nineteen thirty-three, with a ceremony led by Mayor Angelo Joseph Rossi. It is the last of its specific design by Strauss in the area. The structure carries Third Street traffic and features two original, small harbor master’s houses still supported on its piers.
