Woodward's Gardens

Between thirteen and fifteen streets in the Mission District, a two-block stretch of ordinary buildings now stands where a vast amusement park once defined city life. From eighteen sixty-six until eighteen ninety-one, this site hosted Woodward's Gardens, a four-acre pleasure ground built by hotelier Robert B. Woodward. While the surrounding area has changed, a brick structure at seventeen hundred Mission Street displays a historical plaque marking the location.
