Little Italy

North Beach is marked by its steep, winding streets and the dense cluster of Italian cafes, bakeries, and restaurants that line Columbus Avenue. Though the area contains no actual beach, it was named for the shoreline that existed here before nineteenth-century land reclamation pushed the water back. Following the nineteen oh six earthquake, this district became the center of the city’s Italian American community.
