Washington Square

Washington Square is a two point eight acre rectangle of open grass in the North Beach district, easily recognized by the twin spires of the Saints Peter and Paul Church rising directly across from its northern edge. Established in eighteen forty-seven, it stands as one of San Francisco's three original public squares. Long before it became a park, the land was used by Mexican rancher Juana Briones to raise cattle and grow potatoes.
