The First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church stands on Golden Gate Avenue as one of the oldest African American congregations in the western United States. Originally founded in August eighteen fifty-two by the Reverend John Jamison Moore, the church emerged as a center for spiritual and civic life during San Francisco's earliest years. Its history spans several locations across the city, including sites in Chinatown and the Fillmore District, before the current building was constructed in nineteen sixty.
