The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is recognizable by its double-decked western suspension spans and the single, white steel tower of its eastern section. Opened on November twelve, nineteen thirty-six, the structure was the longest crossing over water in the world at the time. It was designed by chief engineer Charles H. Purcell and built by the American Bridge Company to link San Francisco with Oakland.
