St. Joseph's Church

St. Joseph's Church rises above the South of Market neighborhood, distinct for the two golden cupolas that crown its twin towers. Originally established in eighteen sixty-one by Archbishop Joseph Alemany, the parish served as a center for Irish Catholic families until the nineteenth century ended. Following the total destruction of the parish buildings in the nineteen oh six earthquake and fire, the present Romanesque Revival structure was completed in nineteen thirteen, designed by architect John J. Foley.
