The Book Den is the oldest used bookstore in California, recognizable by its long, narrow interior and the distinct, paper-filled aroma that greets visitors. Founded in Oakland in nineteen oh two, the store relocated to Santa Barbara in nineteen thirty-three, when owner Max Clemens Richter moved forty tons of books into the ground floor of the Odd Fellows building on East Anapamu Street.
