The Orpheum Theatre on Hennepin Avenue stands apart with its narrow, unassuming facade that hides a massive auditorium tucked behind it, parallel to Hawthorne Avenue. Designed by the Milwaukee firm Kirchhoff and Rose and opened in nineteen twenty-one, the building was originally known as the Hennepin Theatre. It was built to impress as the largest vaudeville house in the country, featuring a mezzanine playroom for families and an elevator specifically designed to transport live animals for stage acts.
