Music Wall

The Music Wall is a five-story-tall mural featuring oversized musical notation, painted directly onto a large brick surface at ninety-four South Tenth Street. In nineteen seventy-two, the building served as the headquarters for the Schmitt Music Company. At that time, a columnist for the Minneapolis Star publicly described the building's exposed brick wall as an eyesore, suggesting the company should make the wall sing. Schmitt Music took the advice, directing their advertising manager to find a piece of sheet music that was visually complex and difficult enough to be worth displaying on such a massive scale.
