Butler Square is a nine-story brick and timber building that occupies an entire city block, characterized by its massive scale and thick masonry walls. Completed in nineteen oh eight, it was originally built as a warehouse for the Butler Brothers mail-order firm and served as the largest wholesale facility west of Chicago at the time. Architect Harry Wild Jones utilized local Douglas fir for the heavy post-and-beam interior, creating a structure sturdy enough to support three hundred pounds per square foot of merchandise.
