The Minneapolis Armory dominates its block with a massive, windowless brick exterior and rounded corners that define its PWA Moderne architectural style. Completed in nineteen thirty-six using funds from the Public Works Administration, it was the most expensive building in Minnesota at the time. Architect Philip C. Bettenburg, a major in the Minnesota National Guard, designed the structure to house twenty-seven military units.
