The Southern Theater is marked by a distinctive brick Art Moderne facade that replaced its original frontage in the nineteen forties. Designed by architect Charles S. Sedgwick and opened in nineteen ten, the building sits on Washington Avenue, a corridor once known as Snoose Boulevard for the Scandinavian immigrant community that gathered here to watch plays by August Strindberg or attend silent films.
