Historic Stone Arch Bridge

The Stone Arch Bridge stretches two thousand one hundred feet across the Mississippi River, defined by a distinct, gentle S-curve and twenty-three wide spans built from native granite and limestone. Completed in eighteen eighty-three, the structure was commissioned by railroad magnate James J. Hill to carry passenger trains into a new downtown terminal. At the time of its construction, critics doubted the feasibility of such a design and derided the project as Hill's Folly.
