Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts

The Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts is recognizable by its juxtaposition of a century-old red brick building with modern concrete and zinc-clad additions. Located on Flora Street, this institution is the only school situated within the Dallas Arts District. It began in nineteen twenty-two as the first public high school for African American students in Dallas, serving that community for decades before being repurposed in nineteen seventy-six as an arts magnet school.
