Dealey Plaza is recognizable by the triple underpass where Main, Commerce, and Elm streets converge beneath a railroad bridge on the western edge of downtown Dallas. Completed in nineteen forty as a project of the Works Progress Administration, the park was designed as a landscaped gateway to the city, occupying the site where the original Dallas settlement once stood. The plaza honors George Bannerman Dealey, a publisher of The Dallas Morning News who long championed the city's civic development.
