Registan Square

Registan Square is defined by its three monumental madrasas—Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilya-Kori—which frame a central courtyard with soaring, blue-tiled portals. The name itself, which means sandy place in Persian, points to its origins as a public square where merchants once traded silks and spices, and where citizens gathered to hear royal proclamations and witness public spectacles.
