Soviet Sgraffito

The sgraffito murals found in Samarkand are recognized by their method of construction, where layers of colored plaster are applied to a wall and then scratched away while fresh to reveal the contrasting colors beneath. This technique, whose name originates from the Italian word for scratching, became a prominent mode of monumental art throughout the Soviet Union during the post-war years.
