Hunter Street is one of the oldest thoroughfares in Sydney, originally known as Bell Street and renamed for Governor John Hunter, the second man to serve as the colony's leader. While the street now connects George Street to Macquarie Street, its history reaches back to the very beginnings of the settlement. Archaeological digs in the area have uncovered thousands of artifacts, including glass beads, coins from eighteen thirty-four, and the brick footings of merchant homes that once lined the laneways here.
