Patershol

Patershol is a neighborhood of narrow, twisting alleys and uneven cobblestone lanes that curve tightly around the shadows of the medieval Gravensteen castle. The streets here are so compact that in several places you can touch both sides of the lane with your outstretched arms. The area was originally settled in the tenth century and later became the domain of Carmelite friars, whose presence gave the district its name—Patershol, or the fathers’ burrow.
