St Bavo's Cathedral is marked by its eighty-nine-meter-tall Gothic tower, which serves as a prominent landmark in the center of Ghent. Originally established as a parish church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist in nine hundred forty-two, the building underwent continuous expansion in the Gothic style between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. In fifteen hundred fifty-nine, it was officially designated a cathedral when the Diocese of Ghent was founded.
