The massive building you are approaching, known as De Vooruit, is recognizable by its historic stature on the Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat. It was commissioned in nineteen ten by the Cooperative Vooruit, a socialist organization that began as a small bakery in a local tavern. Architect Ferdinand Dierkens designed this structure as a cultural temple to provide a space for the intellectual and artistic development of the working class.
