Korenmarkt

The Korenmarkt is recognizable by the presence of the tall, imposing Saint Nicholas Church on one side and the grand, early twentieth-century post office building on the other. This square served as a major economic hub for Ghent starting nearly a thousand years ago, functioning as the primary marketplace for grain brought into the city by river. Merchants and farmers once crowded this space, as Ghent held staple rights that required grain to be offered for sale here before it could move further along.
