Geeraard de Duivelsteen

Geeraard de Duivelsteen rises above its quiet street with a blunt, fortress-like authority, featuring thick bluestone and sandstone walls and narrow, arched windows. Built around twelve forty-five, this thirteenth-century Gothic structure is one of the oldest secular stone buildings in Ghent. It was originally constructed to defend the Portus Ganda, the medieval trading settlement that marked the city's origins.
