The Prinsenhof is marked today by a lone stone structure known as the Donkere Poort, or Dark Gate, the final remnant of a vanished imperial palace that once sprawled across two hectares. During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, this site held a massive complex of more than three hundred rooms, featuring a private zoo, pleasure gardens, and an elaborate array of kitchens and chapels. It served as the primary residence for the Counts of Flanders and later the dukes of Burgundy.
