Sint-Pietersplein is the largest open public square in Ghent, a vast rectangular expanse measuring eighty by two hundred meters. You can identify the space by the massive, monumental staircase that rises toward the Sint-Amandsplein, set against the backdrop of the baroque Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Sint-Pieterskerk. The square was laid out between eighteen forty-eight and eighteen fifty-one by architect Charles Leclerc-Restiaux, long after the seventh-century Benedictine abbey that dominates its eastern edge had ceased to function as a monastic site.
