The National Palace of Culture in Sofia is marked by a distinctive bronze sun mounted high on its facade, a work by artist Georgi Chapkanov inspired by traditional Bulgarian woodcarving. Known locally as the NDK, this multifunctional complex is the largest of its kind in South-Eastern Europe. It opened in nineteen eighty-one to commemorate the thirteen-hundredth anniversary of the Bulgarian state.
