Independence Square is defined by its yellow-cobblestoned surface and the massive glass domes embedded directly into the plaza floor. These domes offer a view into the ancient Roman ruins of Serdica, which lie preserved beneath the modern city streets. The square sits at the center of the Largo, an architectural ensemble of three grand buildings designed in the nineteen fifties to serve as the representative heart of Sofia.
