St. Sofia Church

St. Sofia Church is defined by its exposed, austere red-brick exterior, a visual hallmark of the early Byzantine basilica style. It stands as one of the oldest churches in Bulgaria, built in the middle of the sixth century during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian the First. The structure was erected over the site of an earlier Roman theater and several smaller, fourth-century churches that served the ancient necropolis of the Roman city of Serdica.
