Women's Market

The Women’s Market, known locally as Zhenski Pazar, is defined by its long, curved path that follows the bed of a former river. Established in eighteen seventy-eight shortly after Bulgaria gained independence, it serves as the oldest open-air marketplace in the city. While it once traded under names like the Wheat Market and the Horse Market, it became known as the Women’s Market due to an Ottoman-era custom that restricted women to shopping only at specific designated locations.
