The National Art Gallery occupies the imposing former Royal Palace on Battenberg Square. Built in two stages between eighteen eighty and eighteen eighty-two, the structure reflects Second Empire architecture with chateauesque elements. While Austro-Hungarian architects under Viktor Rumpelmayer designed the original representative section, Viennese architect Friedrich Grünanger later added the east wing, which once contained the private apartments of the royal family.
