Western Fortified Gate of Serdica

The Western Fortified Gate of Serdica reveals itself as a stone-and-brick archaeological complex, defined by the distinct remains of its pentagonal tower and a section of the city’s ancient wall. First erected during the second half of the second century, this gate originally stood as part of a robust fortification system that protected the Roman city of Serdica. Through centuries of conflict and expansion, the site underwent significant reconstructions, including the addition of an external protective wall and new triangular towers during the fifth and sixth centuries.
