The Eastern Gate of Serdika (at underpass level)

The Eastern Gate of Serdika is defined by its two massive pentagonal towers and a series of stone passageways that sit directly beneath the modern street level. These remains formed the main defensive entrance to the Roman city of Serdika, once a strategic hub during the second through fourteenth centuries. The site was rediscovered in nineteen sixty-six during the construction of an urban underpass and underwent significant restoration between nineteen ninety-seven and nineteen ninety-nine.
