Lougheed House is a grand sandstone mansion in Calgary’s Beltline district, easily identified by its rough-faced exterior, asymmetrical massing, and two prominent towers. Built in eighteen ninety-one, it was originally named Beaulieu, meaning beautiful place, by its owners, Senator Sir James Lougheed and his wife, Isabella Hardisty Lougheed. At the time of its construction, the house stood alone on the prairie, separated from the small town of Calgary by open grasslands.
