The Grand is a downtown theatre built in nineteen twelve, identifiable by its historic brick and sandstone exterior on First Street Southwest. When it opened, the building signaled Calgary’s transition from a small ranching town to a major city. Senator James Lougheed commissioned architect L. R. Wardrop to design the structure as a grand entertainment hub, outfitting it with amenities like electric lighting and dressing rooms with hot and cold running water.
