Education Centre Building

The former Calgary Board of Education headquarters is defined by its raw, exposed concrete exterior and top-heavy, boxy silhouette. Opened in nineteen sixty-nine, the structure was a centerpiece of the city's first major urban renewal scheme, an era when downtown planners sought to replace older blocks with modern, purpose-built civic institutions. Designed by the firm Stevenson Raines, the building represents the height of Brutalist architecture in Calgary, a style chosen to project permanence and institutional authority through unadorned, honest materials.
