Old Port Locks | Lachine Canal National Historic Site

The Old Port Locks are defined by two parallel channels of masonry that drop away from the harbor, cutting a straight, stone-lined path into the earth. These locks are the eastern entrance to the Lachine Canal, an industrial waterway that first opened in eighteen twenty-five. By allowing ships to bypass the turbulent Lachine Rapids, the canal turned Montreal into a central hub for North American trade and manufacturing.
