Saint Patrick's Basilica rises above the downtown core with a tall central tower and a prominent rose window, a distinctive stone landmark in the Gothic Revival style. Completed in eighteen forty-seven, it was built to serve the rapidly growing Irish immigrant population that had arrived in the city during the early nineteenth century. Because this community had outgrown its previous places of worship, the parish purchased a sloped site on what was then the outskirts of town.
