The green copper dome of the Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral rises above the downtown skyline, a distinct architectural echo of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Completed in eighteen ninety-four, this cathedral was built to replace the Saint-Jacques Cathedral, which burned down in eighteen fifty-two. Bishop Ignace Bourget, who commissioned the project, was determined to establish a neoclassical presence in a city where other denominations favored the Gothic Revival style.
