Place d'Armes is identified by the towering Maisonneuve Monument at its center, a bronze fountain and sculpture ensemble depicting Paul de Chomedey, the founder of Montreal. Created in sixteen ninety-three, this site is the second oldest public square in the city. Its name, which translates to a parade ground, reflects its former life as a military training space where soldiers gathered for drills during the eighteenth century.
