The Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site consists of two semi-detached stone houses at the corner of Notre-Dame and Berri streets, identifiable by their tall mansard roof in the Second Empire style. Constructed around eighteen thirty-seven, the building stands on land that once formed part of the Montreal citadel. It is the former residence of Sir George-Étienne Cartier, a lawyer and businessman who served as a principal architect of Canadian Confederation and as Minister of Militia and Defence in the first Dominion cabinet.
