Gate of Chinatown (South Paifang)

The South Paifang stands at the intersection of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Viger Avenue as a traditional Chinese ceremonial gate. It is one of four such ornate arches that mark the boundaries of Montreal’s Chinatown, a district that has existed in this central pocket of the city since the eighteen nineties. The gate is designed with traditional Chinese architectural detailing and serves as a formal entry point for those arriving from the south.
