The Allan Memorial Institute is identifiable by the Ravenscrag mansion, an imposing, rough-hewn granite structure built between eighteen sixty-one and eighteen sixty-four. Perched on the slope of Mount Royal, this building was originally the private home of Sir Hugh Allan, a wealthy shipping tycoon. After the property was donated to the Royal Victoria Hospital in nineteen forty, it was repurposed as a psychiatric hospital and research center.
