Plazuela del Pozo

The Plazuela del Pozo appears as an unplanned opening in the street grid of Getsemaní, created not by colonial architects but by the space around an old well. This well provided residents with heavy water, which was suitable for cleaning and chores rather than for drinking. In eighteen eleven, the square served as a gathering point for the local militia, the lanceros, who marched from here to the city center to help secure Cartagena’s declaration of independence from Spain.
