The Prefecture of the Nord stands as a large, limestone complex defined by a classical H-shaped plan and ornate pediments featuring allegorical sculptures. It occupies land that was once part of the city’s defensive fortifications, which were dismantled in eighteen sixty-five to accommodate urban growth. The building was constructed in phases over forty years, from eighteen sixty-five to nineteen oh five, to serve as the administrative heart of the Nord department.
