The original Théâtre des Variétés-Amusantes opened on April twelfth, seventeen seventy-nine, at the corner of rue de Lancry and rue de Bondy in the tenth arrondissement. It was founded by a former Opéra-Comique actor and dentist named Louis Lécluze, who had previously operated a stage at the Foire Saint-Laurent. While the venue initially struggled under the weight of his personal debts, it gained immediate notoriety for a repertoire of light, crowd-pleasing farces.
