Théâtre Montparnasse & Petit Montparnasse

The Théâtre Montparnasse sits at number thirty-one rue de la Gaîté, easily identified by a three-story facade featuring decorative caryatid herms and a tondo on the upper level displaying a bust of Henri Larochelle. This building, which opened in eighteen eighty-six, was designed by the architect Charles Peigniet, who is also known for his work on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in New York. While the site has been dedicated to theater since eighteen seventeen, the current stone structure replaced an earlier, less permanent version made of wood and plaster.
